Educational & Training Needs

As part of the LIMR mission , our staff is dedicated to both training the scientists of tomorrow as well as the clinicians of today. Below are some of the programs that need your support. For more information contact, Todd Abrams at (610) 645-8145 or abramsj@mlhs.org.

SUMMER COLLEGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The LIMR summer internship program is an eight-week program for academically gifted, undergraduate college students who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and biomedical research. These selected students have the unique opportunity to work side-by-side with some of the Institute’s world-renowned researchers. An internship at LIMR complements the students other educational experiences and equips them with knowledge and skills that are useful when they enter the workplace. Each year, LIMR receives over a hundred applications from students attending leading colleges and universities around the country. Of those applicants, we chose a handful of students to be a part of this program. We hope that each student’s experience at LIMR will encourage their interest and enthusiasm in science, solidifying their decision to pursue a medical or research career.

GRADUATE STUDENT EDUCATION

LIMR researchers have access to graduate students from three local Universities, St. Joseph’s University, Thomas Jefferson University, and Drexel University. Students who have been accepted into the St. Joseph’s University Master of Science in Biology Program can apply for LIMR Research Assistantships. These assistantships pay for tuition expenses to obtain the M.S. degree and the opportunity to perform one’s thesis work under the direction of and in the laboratory of a LIMR faculty member. In addition, students who have been accepted into the College of Graduate Studies at Thomas Jefferson University, as well as those at Drexel University have the opportunity to complete their thesis or dissertation work at LIMR. The vast majority of the costs associated with graduate student education are currently covered by unrestricted funds.

RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM

The annual LIMR Colloquium is an event consisting of two major components. The first part is a continuing medical education program involving invited researchers and clinicians speaking on topics related to cancer or cardiovascular disease. This activity can include short lectures, keynote addresses, or panel discussions. The second part of the program entails poster presentations in which participants have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with LIMR researchers and Main Line Health clinicians about their current research initiatives.

PHYSICIAN RESEARCH TRAINING

LIMR’s location on the campus of the Lankenau Hospital gives us the opportunity to offer incoming medical residents and fellows the option to participate in basic, pre-clinical, and clinical research opportunities. These research internships are available for all residents and fellows in any of the laboratories of the LIMR faculty. Since 2000, 15 residents and fellows have performed laboratory studies at LIMR leading to peer-reviewed journal publications. Opportunities available include:

  • Residency Research
This program is open to general medicine residents in their first, second, or third year of residency training. Residents are able to select a specific LIMR researcher that they would like to work with and are expected to spend 24 hours per week for four months working in the laboratory. This research rotation is done in collaboration with Dr. Jerome Santoro, Chairman, Department of Medicine Main Line Health, and one of Philadelphia Magazine’s top doctors for 2004.
  • Oncology and Cardiology Fellowship Programs
Similar to residency research, physicians who are fellows in the Lankenau Hospital Oncology, or Cardiology are able to complete a laboratory rotation in LIMR laboratories. They are expected to spend 25 hours per week for four months working in the laboratory. This is done in collaboration with Dr. Paul Gilman, Medical Director, Lankenau Cancer Center, or Dr. Peter Kowey, President of the Heart Center and Division Chief of Main Line Health Cardiovascular.
