George C. Prendergast, PhD. was appointed President and CEO of the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research in December 2004. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Prendergast maintains an active research program at the Institute in the areas of cancer cell signaling and molecular cancer therapeutics (see a summary of Dr. Prendergast’s research here).
In his work, Dr. Prendergast has made significant contributions in the areas of genetics and therapeutic development, with over 120 publications and patents. His achievements have been recognized by awards from the American Cancer Society and the Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences program. Dr. Prendergast’s current work focuses on genes that suppress cancer by controlling molecular trafficking processes in cells and on a novel immunomodulatory therapy that emerged from this work. His investigations have been supported by grants and awards from many sources, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defence Breast and Prostate Research Programs, the American Cancer Society, CaPCURE, and a variety of private foundations.
Dr. Prendergast is currently Deputy Editor at Cancer Research, the world’s leading journal in the field. His textbook Molecular Cancer Therapeutics: Strategies for Drug Discovery and Development provides an authoritative overview of the discovery process for modern cancer therapeutics as reviewed in the New England Journal of Medicine. As a recognized leader in the field, Dr. Prendergast serves on numerous grants review, advisory, and journal editorial boards. A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Prendergast attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received his B.A. magna cum laude in Biochemistry in 1983. He received advanced degrees from Yale University (M.S., Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, 1984) and Princeton University (PhD., Molecular Biology, 1989) before performing postdoctoral work at New York University School of Medicine on a fellowship from the American Cancer Society. Dr. Prendergast worked in the Department of Cancer Research at Merck Research Laboratories before being appointed in 1993 to the faculty of The Wistar Institute. In 1999, his main effort moved to The DuPont Pharmaceutical Company where he served as Senior Director of the Cancer Research Group. In 2002, Dr. Prendergast moved his laboratories at Wistar and DuPont to join the faculty of LIMR as a Professor. With fifteen years of expertise in cancer research and drug discovery, Dr. Prendergast brings a unique viewpoint that is informed by the academic and pharmaceutical research cultures.
