Letter from the Chairman of the Board
In the 20th century, Americans’ life expectancy nearly doubled, from 47 to almost 80 years. This amazing advance is due largely to our ability to treat diseasean ability which is a direct outgrowth of medical research. At LIMR, we are proud to have been there every step of the way.
In 1889, our founding hospital started the first bacteriological research laboratory in Philadelphia. Several decades later, Dr. Stanley Reimann founded the Research Institute in a quest to understand cancer by learning how normal cells work. His work garnered international recognition and led to discussion about cancer at a time when it was taboo. It also led to treatment for thousands who otherwise might have rejected care. This emphasis on research, patient health and community outreach remains our cornerstone today. LIMR is one of the nation’s few freestanding, hospital-based medical research centers. We function independently but have the advantage of affiliation with the Main Line Health System. This relationship gives our scientists special opportunities to partner with physicians and find novel approaches to advance medicine and technology. LIMR research helps patients receive the latest treatments for life-enhancing and lifesaving procedures.
Looking ahead, it’s clear that we are on the brink of revolutionary medical advances that will transform the health of generations to come. You will learn more about our world-class research on this website. At LIMR, research is our business. Like any successful enterprise, it depends on creative thinking, unwavering commitment, ample resources and outstanding leadership. We are fortunate to have at the helm Dr. George C. Prendergast, an internationally renowned expert in cancer research and cancer therapeutics. We are also fortunate to count on the support of the National Institutes of Health and numerous foundations, corporations, and individuals. It is only through their generosity that we will continue our history of lifesaving discovery.
