LIMR faculty investigate cancer and heart disease at the levels of the molecule, cell, organ, animal, and patient. In this manner, we synthesize different viewpoints of a disease to generate a fuller understanding of its root causes, and also to reveal possible therapeutic options which may emerge.
Our faculty includes basic researchers, who address fundamental problems in disease; preclinical or translational researchers, who move basic findings into the realm of applied research (e.g. drug discovery and preclinical development); and clinical researchers, who aim to develop the latest advances in medicine for the benefit of the patient. The biological experiments performed by our basic and preclinical researchers are held to the highest standards by an accredited Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Three chief sources of our excellence relate to our work on disease modifier genes, particularly in cancer; certain understudied cell signaling processes; and genetically engineered animal models of disease to study these genes and cell signaling processes (transgenic mice).
Our multidisciplinary approach exploits the synergies which can develop in unexpected ways whenever those with different expertise and experience work near each other. The history of biomedical science includes many such examples of serendipitous breakthoughs that happened as a result of a unique mixture of ideas, viewpoints, and technologies present within one organization. LIMR is one of a few free-standing, hospital-affiliated research institutes in the U.S. Our value derives from the mixture of scientists, biomedical investigators, and clinical integration that is a special characteristic of the LIMR environment.
