Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Roadshow
Coming to a venue near you is the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Roadshow . Unlike the Antiques Roadshow, where items are appraised for their value, the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Roadshow shares information on something that is priceless your health. The Institute has sponsored many successful seminars on the latest advances on the research and treatment of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. The response for these seminars became so overwhelmingly positive that it became time to take them "on the road."
With the assistance of Morris Barrett, former Director of Health Education for Lankenau Hospital, the Institute brings its seminars to places such as Kaiserman JCC and other places in the Philadelphia area. "I'm retired from full-time employment," said Barrett. "Not from life. I would go nuts just staying at home staring at the wall." Barrett, in addition to working at Lankenau Hospital, has worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the 1970's where he was in charge of substance abuse prevention programs. He also wrote a book on health education called Health Education Guide--A Guide for Teaching
Barrett is no stranger to organizing events, he is the Senior Coordinator for the New Jersey Jewish Community Centers' January trips to Florida. What lead him to volunteer his services was attending the Institute's seminars. "I liked them enough to lend my assistance in organizing offsite seminars." Barrett said. "The seminars offer good deal of practical health advice. Also the scientists talk about their research in terms that the average person can understand."
The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research is a free- standing research facility affiliated with the Main Line Health System. The Institute is a separate nonprofit research corporation, which focuses on improving human health through basic research on chronic diseases affecting older people, including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. The Institute also provides ongoing information to the public and the medical community.
