The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research
Wynnewood, PA - - - - - In 2009, an estimated 40,000 women died from breast cancer. To ensure this number continues to decrease, educating women about the disease and conducting research that will lead to new diagnostic tools and treatments for cancer is key. The ninth annual Fight from the Fairway golf tournament will help raise the funds to make that possible.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Honeybrook Golf Club in Honeybrook, PA, this fundraiser donates all proceeds to support breast cancer research at the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research (LIMR) and educational programming at Breastcancer.org. Employees from West Chester-based environmental firm Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®) conceived of the event in 2002, when Karen Schneider, an employee of the company, was first diagnosed with breast cancer. While she unfortunately lost her battle in 2008, the event continues in her memory, raising more than $200,000 for this worthwhile cause.
“This type of seed funding greatly helped LIMR to advance our breast cancer research projects,” stated George Prendergast, Ph.D, Professor, President, & CEO of LIMR. “One example is the development of a new prognostic marker that our work suggests can identify patients whose small and node negative breast cancer needs to be treated more aggressively than would be otherwise indicated. This work would not have been possible without Fight from the Fairway support.”
“We couldn’t be happier that Karen chose the beneficiaries that she did back in 2002,” stated the tournament committee. “Each year we receive updates from both organizations as to how the tournament proceeds have been used. We are continually energized by strides being made in breast cancer research and education. Participating in Fight from the Fairway is a way to truly make a difference, either in Karen’s memory, or for the Karen in your life.”
Patrick G. McCann, WESTON President and CEO, is proud of the employee effort. He stated, “I am truly honored to be associated with our employees that exhibit our company’s core value of making a difference, not just for this event, but every day. Karen’s legacy will live on in our commitment to finding a cure.”
We’re honored to be a recipient of the Fight from the Fairway tournament again this year. Karen Schneider and her family are very special to Breastcancer.org” says Hope Wohl, CEO of Breastcancer.org. “Continued funding from committed supporters like Fight from the Fairway has allowed Breastcancer.org to remain the premier online resource for reliable, comprehensive information on breast health and breast cancer.”
“It’s vitally important that our information is current, that we’re covering the latest research news, and that we provide new programs that meet the needs of our audience. So, when important news happens like the US Preventative Task Force’s Screening Recommendations for mammography (November 2009), Breastcancer.org was able to mobilize a response that answered people’s questions, highlighted the facts and implications, and provided an outlet for people to voice their opinions and discuss their concerns. Breastcancer.org is only able to offer this kind of support because of the generous contributions from supporters like Fight from the Fairway.”
Fran Dunphy, head basketball coach from the Temple Owls and a local leader in the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, will be on hand as Master of Ceremonies. Other key sponsors include Brandenburg Industrial Service, Drinker, Biddle & Reath LLP, Wharton Surety, Feeding Frenzy and PDS.
The tournament has an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. The cost for an individual golfer is $135 or $500 for a foursome. The day includes golf with cart, range balls, prizes and a barbeque lunch following the round. Additionally, anyone can purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a five-dray trip to Walt Disney World. To register as an individual or as a foursome, become a sponsor, purchase raffle tickets, or learn more, visit the event Web site at www.FightFromTheFairway.org.
